US Launches $100 million Campaign

US Launches $100 million Campaign
University School has launched a $100 million campaign -- among the largest of any independent day school in the country -- that includes a $10 million lead gift from the The T.L.L. Temple Foundation. The gift is a result of a bequest that Thomas Temple Keeler, US class of 1939, made to the Foundation. It is the largest gift in the school's 122-year history.

The announcement was made recently at a kick-off event during the official opening of the school's new 52,000 square foot academic wing at the Hunting Valley Campus. The new wing will be named in honor of Keeler.

The $100 million campaign will be used to recruit and sustain an outstanding faculty, to increase University School's commitment to financial aid throughout Northeast Ohio, and to offer an inspiring environment in which to work. Over $68 million has been raised to date toward the goal.

"This transformational gift from the Temple Foundation will make a significant impact on the school by enabling us to attract top faculty to US and to provide exceptional spaces for teaching and learning," said US headmaster Steve Murray.

In addition to the Keeler gift, two other significant commitments to the school were announced.

Bill Oberndorf, US Class of 1971, and his wife, Susan, have made a multi-million dollar gift to the school, which includes $5 million to establish The Susan and Bill Oberndorf '71 Fund for Financial Aid. This gift, which was included in the class of 71's $10 million reunion gift, is named in honor of Betty Jane and Walter J. Oberndorf, Jr. '42, Mr. Oberndorf's mother and father, and Caroline and Edward Oberndorf '48, Mr. Oberndorf's aunt and uncle.

"The Oberndorf's incredible generosity begins transforming our commitment to financial aid and allows us to make the school accessible and affordable to more boys of great promise and ability," said Murray.

US alumnus Dan T. Moore III, class of 1959, and his wife, Marge, made a $4 million commitment to establish the Marge and Dan Moore Science Center located on the first floor of the new academic wing.

"As an industrialist and serial entrepreneur, Dan believes that science education helps unleash the tools that lead to innovation," noted Murray. "He and his wife, Marge, who served in US's Science Department for 17 years, know first-hand the impact science education has on generations of US students. We are extremely grateful to their extraordinary gift and support of US."
